Basic Skincare Necessities: What Everyone Should Include In Their Routine

There is so much information out there about how to take care of your skin that it can be hard to know where to start. If you feel overwhelmed by all the advice and product recommendations out there, the best thing you can do is to start simple and build a consistent skincare routine. That is why I have put together this guide to help you get back to the basics and get started with a minimal skincare routine that is easy to implement. By the end of this post, I am confident you will realize that skincare doesn’t have to be so complicated and be excited to get consistent with your personal routine!

Why You Should Establish a Consistent Skincare Routine

I find I’m more likely to stick to my routine when I know why it’s important. The skin is the largest organ of your body and forms a natural barrier to protect you from environmental damage. In order to maintain healthy skin, it is essential to keep it hydrated, protected, and free from the daily build up of dirt and debris. To do this properly, I have established a basic skincare routine that includes cleansing, applying a few essential products, and moisturizing daily. Your skincare routine should not feel stressful! A basic or beginner skincare routine shouldn’t take up more than 10 minutes of your day!

Topical Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to fight free radical damage, making it an essential ingredient in your skincare routine. It is also naturally anti-inflammatory and can help uneven skin tone, fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation, and many more common skin concerns. Although it can sound too good to be true, it is so highly recommended because of its many benefits and the fact that just about anyone can use it.

My personal favorite topical Vitamin C is the Revision C+ Correcting Complex. It leaves my skin glowy and more youthful, while also defending it from skin damage effects free radicals can cause.

Daily SPF

Most people understand the need for sunscreen while at the pool or beach. But not wearing a daily sunscreen is a missed opportunity when it goes to long term skin health. Although we may not immediately notice the effects of daily sun exposure, the cumulative effect over time adds up . Even simply driving your car, your skin is exposed to the sun and over time you will start to see the damage daily exposure can cause. To combat this, I would recommend you get in the habit of applying a daily SPF after moisturizing before applying makeup.

I use Intellishade Original most days because of the anti-aging benefits. It is also slightly tinted and looks beautiful on your skin! If you are more acne-prone, I would recommend Elta MD Clear because it is known for not clogging pores and will prevent any breakouts from occurring with SPF.

Night Treatment

Consistency is key in your night time skincare routine, just as in your morning routine. After cleansing your face and washing off your makeup and any sweat and debris that has accumulated from the day in your pores, I recommend treating your skin with a serum. My one stop shop of serums is Melatonik Serum. It is suitable for any skin type because of its gentle formula and deeply nourishes your skin while you sleep. Its three powerful ingredients are Melatonin, Bakuchiol, and Vitamin C. These three ingredients together protect your skin, prevent aging by restoring elasticity, and visibly brighten. Melatonik will do all the work while you get some rest!

I want to point out that this is just an example of a basic skincare routine that I would recommend. I realize that when it comes to skincare, it is not always “one size fits all.” Therefore, the best thing you can do is schedule a skin consult with me. While this is a great template for getting started with establishing a consistent skincare routine, it is always more beneficial to see a patient’s skin in person to assess his or her needs.
